After a full week of stressful work, there will no better activity on weekend than a relaxing picnic to a beautiful garden. With the air so clean and the wind so soft, a garden picnic would definitely bring the peaceful mood back.

To that, we would recommend to visit Bogor Botanical Garden. Bogor city is located about 60 kilometers from Jakarta. The garden is 87 hectares wide and filled with about 15,000 collections of plants and trees.

Getting There

Bogor city is very accessible from Jakarta and Bandung city, either if you are driving your own vehicle or using public transportation.

From Jakarta:

  • From Soekarno Hatta International Airport, take a Damri bus with the route Bogor – Jakarta. Take off at Botani Square Bogor. The botanical garden is located right across the street.
  • From train station, take a KRL Commuter Line with the route from anywhere to Bogor. Get off at Bogor Station. Get on a green public car number 2 or 3. Get off at Bogor Botanical Garden.
  • Using Private Vehicle: Get on a Dalam Kota Toll Road – Interchange Cawang – Jagorawi Toll Road – Exit Bogor – Jalan Padjajaran – Entrance Gate to Bogor Botanical Garden.

From Bandung:

  • From Leuwipanjang Bus Terminal, take a public bus with the route of Bogor – Bandung. Get off at Bogor Station and continue to Bogor Botanical Garden using a green public car number 3.
  • Using Private Vehicle: Get on Pasteur Toll Gate – Purbaleunyi Toll Road – Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road – Cikunir Interchange – JORR Toll Road – Dukuh Interchange – Jagorawi Toll Road – Exit Bogor – Jalan Padjajaran – Entrance Gate to Bogor Botanical Garden.

Operating Hours and Ticket

To enter this beautiful garden, you need to pay $2 per person for the ticket. If you bring your vehicle inside the garden, these prices may apply:

  • Car : $2.25
  • Motorcycle : $0.4
  • Bike : $0.4

Bogor Botanical Garden opens everyday at 07.30 to 17.30. It has four entrance gates, but not all of them open every day. Here is the schedule:

  • Gate 1 : Opens everyday at 07.30 to 17.30. This is the main gate.
  • Gate 2 : Opens only on Sunday and public holidays
  • Gate 3 : Opens everyday at 17.00 to 22.00.
  • Gate 4 : Opens only on Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays.

 

Thematic Gardens

The entire area of Bogor Botanical Garden consists of many venues such as thematic gardens, supporting venues, and facilities. Some of the thematic gardens are:

  • Mexican Garden

Mexican Garden is filled with Mexican floras such as Caribbean agave and various cacti. This thematic garden looks similar like a desert in order to support the plants’ growth. Unique thing on this garden is the cactus sculptures with the shape of a woman and trio musicians wearing sombrero.

  • Aquatic Plant Collection

The collections of aquatic plant on Bogor Botanical Garden are not just the ones from Indonesia, but you can also see many aquatic plants from Brazil, Africa, and many other countries. Generally, there are four kinds of aquatic plants; oxygen aquatic plants, floating aquatic plants, mud aquatic plants, and edge aquatic plants.

  • Orchidarium

Orchidarium is a glass house filled with many kinds of beautiful orchids. Some of them are local species and some others are hybrid. Nearby the entrance of Orchidarium, there is a display of various orchid seeds in any colors that you can buy and bring home. Each seed costs you only $5.25 to $7.5.

  • Sudjana Kassan Garden

Sudjana Kassan Garden is an open garden dedicated for Sudjana Kassan, the first Indonesian to be the director of Bogor Botanical Garden. He was the main curator of this garden. In the middle of the garden, you can see a chest statue of him.

  • Deer Park

Just like its name, Deer Park is a wide open park where so many deers live there. You can even feed them with carrot or spinach you can buy from street vendor nearby the area.

 

Research Facilities

Bogor Botanical Garden is not always about gardens. There also are other flora-related venues that could support the garden as a whole. Those venues are:

  • Herbarium

Herbarium is a collection of dried and pressed plants kept on a piece of paper. This is very useful for research purpose in taxonomy. For visitors, this may make it easier for you to learn about plants and its characteristic. Herbarium opens everyday at 08.00 to 15.00.

  • Zoological Museum

Besides occupying and researching about plants, Bogor Botanical Garden also does a little research in zoology. In zoological museum, you can many collections of dried specimens and animal fossils.

  • Conservation Building and Library

The name is already clear what the venue is for. Inside this building, you can see several endangered or endemic species that needs to be conserved. You can also find many great books about flora and faunas.

  • Treub Laboratory

Treub Laboratory was built as a research lab. The name was taken from a professional botanist, Melchior Treub, who had big contribution in researching and developing Bogor Botanical Garden. He was also a zoologist who helped the initiation to build the Zoological Museum.

De Daunan Café is a restaurant overlooking the wide garden within the area of Bogor Botanical Garden. The building design was adapted from Sundanese architecture with romantic lighting to enhance the atmosphere. This place is very nice to dine in with family or for romantic dates. De Daunan Café is most easy to access from Gate 4.

  • Grand Garden Café and Resto

Other choice of fancy eatery within the area of Bogor Botanical Garden is Grand Garden Café and Resto. The restaurant serves Mexican cuisine like tacos, quesadilla, and even a mojito. This café resto is located nearby the Mexican Garden.

  • Pinus Guest House

Pinus Guest House is located inside the area of Bogor Botanical Garden. To be more specific, it is located right next to Gate 3. The guest house is not far from orchidarium, Randu Lawn, and Astrid Lawn.

  • Nusa Indah Guest House

Other choice of accommodation on Bogor Botanical Garden is Nusa Indah Guest House. The hotel is located nearby the Treub Lab and Zoological Museum. The easiest access to this hotel is through the Gate 2.
