Having a holiday in West Java, there are some beautiful tourism spot that cannot be missed. One of the spots is Pelabuhan Ratu. Pelabuhan Ratu is located in Sukabumi regency, West Java province.

It lies about 60 km in the south of the regency. The place is famous for the beach is very beautiful. The visitors are also able to breathe fresh air while playing or simply taking a walk in the sea shore.

Pelabuhan Ratu Sukabumi is widely known by the local travelers. However, there are many international tourists that start to lay their eyes on the beach because of its waves. Yes, Pelabuhan Ratu Beach is widely known by the surfers.

The beach has some famous surfing spots such as Batu Guram, Karang Sari, Cimaja, Karang Haji, Indicator, Sunset Beach, Ombak Tujuh, dan Ujung Genteng. The spots are best visited from May to October when the wave reaches the highest level.

Pelabuhan Ratu also offers the visitors with a painting like scenery. The visitors who aren’t able to surf will be able to enjoy the beautiful view of the boats from afar. There are many fishermen’s boats sailing that will not make the tourists bored. The beach in Pelabuhan Ratu cannot be used for swimming. The wave is quite high and the beach is precipitous.  Pelabuhan Ratu is also famous for its fish that is marlin fish.

In certain time, the visitors are able to experience the cultural and mystical tradition of the local residents of Sukabumi.  One of the famous local traditions is the sea party tradition. The local citizens usually throw a buffalo head and other types of offerings to the sea.

The ceremony is usually done by the local fishermen as a form of thank you to God for the blessing their life. The ceremony is usually held on April 5 for two nights. Besides the offering, there will also be some stage performances and contests where the tourists can take part. The ceremony is held annually.

There is also another local tradition that is famous in Pelabuhan Ratu Sukabumi. The tradition is called ngabungbang. The word ngabungbang comes from the local world which means to clean one’s body and mid.

In ngabungbang tradition, the locals usually take bath in Cisukawayana River close To Pelabuhan Ratu. The ritual is usually held at 14th to 15th Maulud month (a month based on Moslem calendar). The purpose of the ritual is to thrown away the bad things and to beg for forgiveness to God. The locals believe that their wish will be granted after completing the ritual.

Pelabuhan Ratu is also famous for its mystical myth. The myth is about the Queen of the South Sea known as Nyai Roro Kidul. The Queen is said to be the owner of the South Java Sea where the locals sail. A famous hotel in this area called Samudera Beach Hotel has a certain room used to honor the Queen.

In this hotel, the visitors are not allowed to spend the night in room number 13. There, the visitors will be able to find many kinds of offerings and mystical ornaments. The local residents believe that presenting some offerings will protect them in the sea. The Queen will not bring any misfortune towards the fishermen.

There are some ways of how to get into Pelabuhan Ratu in Sukabumi. Departing from the Jakarta City, there are many buses to Sukabumi available. The bus usually departs from Kampung Rambutan bus station, Pulo Gadung bus station, and Tanjung Priok bus station. Jakarta – Sukabumi bus ticket costs $1.2 – $1.5.

The trip from Jakarta to Sukabumi will spend about 4 to 5 hours. There will be buses that will take the visitors from Sukabumi to Pelabuhan Ratu. The bus ticket will cost about $1.2. The trip will spend about 1 until 2 hours.

If the travelers want to see take a look around the area of Pelabuhan Ratu, they are able to board public transportation called “angkot”. The ticket costs $0.3.  There is no taxi available in this area. However the visitors can ride a motorbike taxi. The cost varies depending from distance. The cost usually starts at $0.8.

Tired of watching the beautiful landscapes and wanting to taste some local delicacies, there are many restaurants available in Pelabuhan Ratu. The restaurants are Ombak Tuhuh Pub, Baraya Rumah Makan, Bundo Rumah Makan, Ratu Minang, Sanning Asih Mirah Sari, Katineung Rasa, Puri Surya Rawakalong. Mos of the restaurants are located in Jalan Raya Citepus, Sukabumi.

If the vistors want to buy some souvenirs to bring home, they will be able to find many souvenir shops close to every beach in Pelabuhan Ratu. Pelabuhan Ratu is famous for its handicrafts such as handicrafts made from sea shells. Souvenirs made from buffalo horn are also famous here. The area is also famous for its seafood.

Meatballs made from tengiri fish (Spanish mackerel) and marlin fish are the most wanted items here. There are also so many fresh sea products caught by the fishermen available such as squids, fish, crabs and many more. Sukabumi is also famous for its mocha, nutmeg syrup, rosella syrup and ginger bandrek (local ginger ale) .
