Every travelers must have gone through the era of being newbie travelers, which is also known by the term “rookie” or “first-time traveler”. And as a newbie, let’s admit it if we have done some mistakes that are actually minor, yet pretty disturbing and interfering.

Sometimes those mistakes happened again on our next trip, and finally it became a habit even if we no longer are newbie travelers.

The conclusion is, it is important for travelers to identify which basic mistakes that are commonly done by first time traveler. The purpose is clearly to be the reminder so you could avoid them as much as you can. I have already gathered some points, and here are some basic mistakes that are commonly done by first time traveler (on random order):

1. Passport Issue

While travelling aboard, passport is definitely something important. Unfortunately, there are many first time traveler who made mistakes regarding their passport. The first mistake and the most oftenly done one is leaving their passport at home (so you need to drive back home after you arrive on airport), leaving passport on the hotel, forgetting to make a copy of passport, and losing the passport itself.

2. Planning Too Many Itineraries

Sometimes, first time travelers have one thing in common with people who haven’t eaten at all in one day. When the time to eat finally comes, it seems like they wanna stuff everything into their mouth. Same goes with rookies on travelling.

Thinking that they have this one chance, they stuff every tourism destination into their itinerary without considering other factors, such as body stamina and time. At the end of the day, they need to toss away their itinerary becase it is useless.

3. Packing as if like they’re moving their house

Forget first time traveller, sometimes people who travel a lot even make this mistake: carrying too many things that seems like they are moving their house away. Do you make this kind of mistake quite often?

4. Underestimating jetlag

Sometimes, first time travelers underestimate jetlag. In the end, their stamina dropped and they even got sick, and finally they couldn’t enjoy their tourism activities. The conclusion is: do not underestimate jetlag as it influences our biological clock.

5. Not carrying cash, especially the small bills

Other standard mistakes from newbie travelers, is to consider that ATM is available at any places, and any cities in the world accept credit card. They end up not preparing enough cash, and then they’re out of ideas when they need to pay various things that requires to be paid with small bills, such as when they take a ride on a public transport (especially on the countries that still generally uses cash), giving tips, etc.

6. Keeping all the stuffs on the baggage

Sure it is no trouble if your baggage arrive on time on your destination. But, you must have never heard about baggage that got transitted to many places before it is finally out of track. If what’s inside it is just clothes, it might be not a big problem as you can buy some other more to replace it, although still it would be annoying. Now what if you put valuable documents and other important stuffs in there?

7. Make a wrong reservation of hotel or plane ticket

This one is a real newbie travelers’ mistake : entering the wrong date on hotel or plane ticket reservation. It seems like a minor thing, but it could be crucial. A friend of mine did this mistake. Unfortunately, he booked the ticket for his boss, and the boss ended up having to struggle finding new ticket via other country, followed by other struggles to make new visa. So, do not forget to check and recheck everytime you are making your reservation.

9. Not learning the local culture

There is an Indonesian saying, “where the Earth is stepped on, that is where the sky is lift upon”. That means, “wherever you go to, always respect the customs applied on that place”. It is important to know the culture and traditions applied on a place before we set our foot there, so we wouldn’t get confused and experience a culture shock. It also could avoid us from being labelled as an annoying tourist.

10. Misunderstanding the routes of local transportation

Not wanting to get lost on a place we just knew, especially if that region has the language and tradition that is far different from where we are from, and to make it more ultimate, that country is not even familiar with English? Well then pay a well attention to the routes of local transportation on that place.

A friend of mine once travelled to a small town in Japan (and he didn’t even speak Japanese). He made mistake in noting down the train route to take. He ended up having to wait out for quite long time before there comes the train to take him back to the right track.

11. Travel with wrong partner

It is known that some travelers love to travel with new people and don’t mind with having a complete stranger as their travel partner. The problem is, not every traveler is fun. Some even will make your holiday to be a nightmare. So, be careful in choosing a travel partner (especially the person is quite a stranger to you), okay?

12. Being Too Overboard in Hunting for Cheap Price

Sometimes, first time traveler thinks that it’s no problem to get the flight to an airport in the middle of nowhere and is quite far from the main destination city. Simply because the plane ticket fare is cheap! (This almost happened to me, haha).

Actually, after you calculate it more thoroughly with the transport fare, meals, etc, it turns out that the budget is more or less the same with the normal price of plane ticket to the closer airport. Cheap prices got us overwhelmed sometimes!
