Mount Bromo is one of the most popular tourism objects in Indonesia. This active volcano is a part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park located on East Java. The mount itself covers up the area of 800 square meters in four different towns; Malag, Pasuruan, Probolinggo, and Lumajang. Mount Bromo is about 2,392 meters high above the sea level. To Get There

First of all, you need to go to East Java by taking a flight to Juanda International Airport in Surabaya city. From the airport, get a public bus or taxi to Bunguarsih Terminal Surabaya where you can get another public bus to take you to Mount Bromo for about $18. It will take about two to three hours for the bus to take you from Surabaya to Cemoro Lawang Village. During the trip, we would recommend you to look at your windows instead of sleeping off because the view is beautiful.  It may count as a warm-up for the view you will get to see on Mount Bromo later on.

 

To Stay

There are plenty of guesthouse and budget hotels for backpackers around Mount Bromo. Once you reach Ngadisari Village, you will find some locals offering homestays for you. But the best place to stay is at Cemoro Lawang Village. This village is closer to the mount so it would save more time. Ngadisari Village is located about 3 kilometers away from the mount and Cemoro Lawang Village is located right at the crater rim.

The weather is very cold around Mount Bromo. You might want to book a hotel that supplies hot shower. Some travelers choose to not taking a shower at all during their stay around Mount Bromo. If you are very not comfortable with the chill, you can book your hotel at nearby towns such as Malang, Pasuruan, Probolinggo, or Tretes.

 

Hiking

There are several ways to explore the incredible nature of Mount Bromo. First, the classic way, is by hiking it. Mount Bromo is not difficult to hike. You do not need special skills or experience for it. Stairway has been provided with two lanes so the visitors may go up and down easily. The area of Mount Bromo is covered with black sands produced from the volcanic eruption of Mount Bromo itself.

In the middle of the hike, you will get through steep track with 45 degrees of slope. But thanks to the provided tracks, even kids may hike easily. If you are going through this track, it means that you will reach the mountain top in ten more minutes.

 

Horse Riding

Another way to reach the top of Mount Bromo is by riding a horse. This option is very popular because it is unique and unusual. Besides that, riding a horse may save much more energy than hiking. At the foot of Mount Bromo, there will be many local vendors offering a horse to rent and ride. The cost is about $3.75 to $7.5 .

Jeep Ride

For an advanced experience, take a jeep ride to explore Mount Bromo. Renting a jeep will cost IR 600,000. It may seem pricy, but considering the jeep could occupy up to six people at a time, then it is quite cheap if you go in group.

The jeep will take to you from Cemoro Lawang to Penanjakan, a hill nearby Mount Bromo where you can witness a scenic panorama of Mount Bromo. Best time to visit Penanjakan is at the dawn, so you can see the sun rises in the background of Mount Bromo. This majestic view is just too good to be missed.

At the Peak

The top of Mount Bromo is very breezy and cold. Make sure you wear warm clothes before hiking up. At this peak, you will get to see the sunrise and beautiful scenery of Mount Semeru with the blue sky as the background. Mount Semeru is a huge mount located nearby Mount Bromo and is also a part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

If you hike a little bit higher, there will be an active volcanic crater right at the peak of Mount Bromo. This crater is dangerous within the radius of 4 kilometers. There is no fence surrounding it so you really need to be careful, especially if you bring along children.

At the peak, you will find plenty vendors offering warm snacks and drinks such as instant cup noodles, fried snacks (gorengan), and a cup of warm tea or coffee. The price is slightly higher than normal, but it is very worth it to beat the chilly breeze.

 

Cultural Festival

Mount Bromo is settled by local tribe of Tengger which mostly embrace Hindu. Every once in a year, the people of Tengger will hold a sacred festival there. Exactly, it is held on every Kasada (the tenth month of Hindu calendar) which fall on around September to November. Kasada Ceremony is practiced to present sacrifices to the Gods and the first ancestors of Tengger named Dewi Roro Anteng and Joko Seger. To present the sacrifice, they will throw vegetables, fruits, chickens, and or goats to the craters. Sometimes, they would even throw money on it. This festival is very unique to see. There usually are plenty of tourists visiting Mount Bromo just to see this festival while exploring the majestic nature.

 

Tips

  • Start your journey from Cemoro Lawang in the very morning so you get the chance to witness the beautiful sunrise at Mount Bromo.
  • Do not forget to wear warm jacket and probably mittens because the temperature is very cold at Mount Bromo, especially at the peak. It could reach up to 3 degrees Celcius.
  • After the sun rises, the weather will gradually get warmer quite fast.
  • If you are nature explorer, Mount Semeru is also worth exploring. It is very close to Mount Bromo.
  • Always get your camera ready because dramatic panorama will be everywhere.

 

There is nothing can give refreshing peace as nature’s beauty and fresh air. And that is what Mount Bromo has to offer. This object is the perfect place to introduce the beauty of nature to your children. We believe they would love the environment, the view, and even probably the horse ride.
